The Azzarelli Outreach Clinic was founded by Helen M Chigaros, MS RN in 1999. The clinic started in a large closet in the Lisieux Outreach Center by checking the blood pressure of parishioners after Sunday mass.
As Helen's group of patients increased, it was evident that there was a growing need to care for those who are not adequately insured. Fr. Tony Taschetta, Fr. Joel Fortier, Mrs. Chigaros, and Dr. James Kennedy approached the Azzarelli Family to help them build a center which would serve people with no insurance.
Barbara and Joe Azzarelli generously donated funds so that a clinic with three exam rooms would be built within Hammes Hall, formerly St. Teresa Catholic Grade School.
The new clinic opened in 2005. Since then, under the direction of Mrs. Chigaros and volunteer physicans and nurses, the Azzarelli Outreach Clinic has served thousands of patients.
In February of 2017, Mrs. Chigaros passed away, and Mr. Dave Duda, MS RN succeeded her as director. Mr. Duda made great improvements regarding the organization of the clinic, increasing staff, fundraising, and outreach. Mrs. Delynn Geistwhite, RNC succeeded Mr. Duda as director, and she helped to improve doctor relationships, grant writing, and women's health services. Today, Mrs. Judy Busato, RN has served as director of the clinic since 2021.
The Azzarelli Outreach Clinic sees over a thousand patients annually who are uninsured or underinsured. The clinic does not ask for any type of insurance payment. Its services are free, and it operates on the generosity of volunteers and donors.
